1.1.2 Market prospect
In March, 2024, the low altitude economy was included in the State Council’s government work report for the first time, and subsequently, corresponding policy measures were quickly introduced in various regions. Various new products such as flying cars, unmanned manned aircraft, and light sports aircraft are emerging, and the trillion dollar market for low altitude economy shows broad development prospects. The exploration pace of new business models and formats is accelerating. With the gradual opening of the national low altitude airspace and the active support of the general aviation and unmanned aerial vehicle industry, traditional security systems mainly target ground threats, while threats and interference from the air are becoming increasingly prominent. The safety issues caused by the abuse of drones and illegal flight activities in some important regions of our country are becoming increasingly serious. Relevant national departments have issued notices requiring strengthening the safety prevention and control of low altitude small aircraft in these important areas, effectively detecting and responding to “low, slow, and small” targets, and building a three-dimensional security system.
1. Development status and trends
(1) The current development status of anti drone technology
With the rapid development of drone technology, the demand for anti-drone technology has become extremely urgent. Although drones have brought many conveniences to society, their widespread use has also raised concerns about security and privacy. The research and development of anti-drone technology aims to address various potential threats that drones may pose, including privacy violations, airspace violations, and malicious attacks.
At present, the anti-drone systems use various technologies for detecting, tracking, and identifying drones, among which the most common are radar, optical sensors, and acoustic sensors. These technologies can not only detect drones in the surveillance field, but also monitor birds, kites, other flying/floating objects, and moving objects on the ground. At present, the anti-drone technology is mainly divided into two categories: active countermeasure technology and passive detection technology.
Active countermeasure technology interferes with the communication and navigation systems of drones, preventing their normal operation or forcing them to land. Specific technologies include electromagnetic interference, laser interference, and radio frequency interference. The advantage of proactive countermeasures technology lies in its ability to actively respond to drone threats, interfere with drone operations, and force them to leave or land. However, this technology also has limitations, such as potential interference to operators and nearby devices, as well as dependence on drone communication and navigation systems.
Passive detection technology relies on sensors and monitoring systems to detect and identify the presence of drones. Related technologies include radar systems, optical cameras, and thermal imaging. The advantage of passive detection technology is that it typically does not interfere with the communication and navigation systems of drones, as they rely on sensors and monitoring devices. However, they also have some limitations, such as limited detection range and susceptibility to weather conditions.
(2) The key role of communication technology in the anti-drone technology
Intelligent unmanned systems enable drones to achieve a certain degree of autonomous operation in specific tasks and contexts. But for more complex tasks and decisions, such as military operations or disaster impacts, even if drones have advanced artificial intelligence, they may require human intervention. Therefore, communication technology plays a crucial role in the anti-drone technology.
Modern communication technology achieves real-time response, multi-source data fusion, and fast decision support through high-speed data transmission such as 5G and 6G, enhancing signal coverage and stability, expanding operational range. High precision positioning technology improves positioning accuracy, dynamic frequency switching and interference technology ensures communication security, wide-band technology eliminates blind spots, MIMO technology improves data transmission speed and reliability, and jointly improves the efficiency and accuracy of anti-drone systems.
(3) The key role of artificial intelligence in the anti-drone technology
In the field of the anti-drone technology, artificial intelligence plays a key role, mainly reflected in three core aspects: high-speed data processing and real-time decision-making, pattern recognition and anomaly detection, and adaptive and continuous learning. Intelligent algorithms, especially deep learning, can efficiently process and analyze complex data from sensors such as radar, infrared, visible light, and sound, improving the accuracy and efficiency of drone detection. Multi sensor data fusion technology further enhances the robustness and flexibility of the system. However, artificial intelligence still faces many challenges in the anti-drone field, such as how to continuously adapt to constantly changing drone technologies and tactics, and how to accurately identify drones in complex environments. In the future, with the continuous advancement of technology, artificial intelligence is expected to play a greater role in the anti-drone field, promoting further improvement of system performance. At the same time, we also need to pay attention to and address potential privacy and security issues to ensure the healthy development of artificial intelligence technology.
(4) China Mobile’s business development in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles
By now, China Mobile (Chengdu) Industry Research Institute has established a 5G networked drone management and operation platform, focusing on drone monitoring, inspection, emergency response, military civilian integration and other fields to carry out drone platform management. Through the sensing capability of 5G base stations, 5G airborne terminals, and combined with China Mobile Lingyun, a low-cost, large-scale, and beyond line of sight unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) low altitude supervision system has been created.
(5) The application of artificial intelligence (data industry) in the field of anti-drone operations
By now, artificial intelligence has not been widely applied in the anti-drone field, but some enterprises, such as Xi’an Zhiyuyun Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., have launched an advanced drone countermeasure and low altitude target monitoring and early warning strike system. This system integrates advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing, providing strong technical support for the military and security fields.
2. Future development trends
Faced with the challenges of drone technology, the future drone countermeasure equipment is bound to receive more attention and investment from countries and enterprises. Each country will strive to develop and produce more advanced, efficient, and reliable countermeasures technologies. In the future, the anti-drone technology needs to make significant progress in three major areas: autonomous learning, adversarial gaming, and multi-agent collaboration. Autonomous learning ability will enable the system to adapt to the environment in real time and make intelligent responses; the adversarial game technology will enhance the adaptability and response strategies of the system; and multi-agent collaboration can achieve efficient information sharing and collaborative operations. Overall, future drone countermeasures will integrate multiple countermeasures, tending towards intelligence, automation, miniaturization, and portability. With the continuous strengthening of research and application, the anti drone industry will continue to expand, and the market size will also continue to expand. According to statistics from Marketsand Markets, a global research firm, the size of the global anti-drone market has grown from $499 million in 2018 to $2.276 billion in 2024, with a annual compound growth rate of 28.8% between 2018 and 2024. It is expected that by 2027, the value of the global drone countermeasure market will have reached $4.8 billion, with a annual compound growth rate of approximately 28.9%. The drone countermeasure market is facing unprecedented development opportunities.
1.1.3 Technical analysis
The drone countermeasure technology, also known as anti drone technology, refers to systematic techniques used for drone countermeasures. Classification of the drone countermeasures technology:
(1) RF technology
By generating a large amount of RF output signals, it interferes with the wireless connection between the drone and the operator. Once the RF link is cut off, a drone will be forced to land on the ground or driven away.
(2) GNSS interference
Interference with satellite connections of drones, such as GPS or GLONASS navigation signals used for navigation. Drones that lose satellite connectivity will remain in place, on land, or return to their takeoff point.
(3) Deception
It allows a person to control the target drone by hijacking its communication link. (also known as protocol operation).
(4) Laser and mesh bullets
Using directional energy to destroy important parts of the drone’s body, they cause it to fall to the ground. The purpose of the design is to enable the target drone or its rotor to use conventional or custom designed ammunition to destroy the attacking drone.
(5) Combination technology
Many anti-drone systems also use a combination of interference elements, with the most common being the RF and GNSS interference combination technology.
